Welcome to Ed's Game Development Page
This is the Game Development Page
In this class, we have been learing the Unity software, which is a game engine used to make all sorts of games. We develope an Atari style game to begin with, and then our 3D First Person Shoooter, but lots of other stuff along the way. Thanks to Sean, our lecturer, for his great patience, and indepth knowledge

Our First Game
You have to know what a game is , to make one. Sean set us the task of making a card game , with dice. Ours was called Bottleneck It worked well, with clear rules and a clear winner. So.... Deal 6 cards ...then each player rolls the dice...

Our First Computer Game
Its not finished yet, and still needs quite a bit of work, but this is an example of some of our first prgramming, click here to see a still image

Unity : Game Engine
Unity is a a piece of software, that is used to create video games. It can be programmed so all the different elements in the game can interact with each other. In the picture you can see what the software looks like. Click here

High Concept Document
We got the words, Banquet & Letter, and we had to come up with a game idea with them. We decided on the Banquet of King Arthur, and this is the document we came up with. Probably a bit too much design and not enough concept, but still happy with 75%.

Atari 2600 emulation game
Have just started work on our Atari style game. Still trying to get my head around the tiny screen ratio. Here are some sample sprites. I think we better keep working on them.

Jet Pac Design Doc.
I did a 10 page design doc for the Atari : Jet Pac Revisited game. In it I detail, almost every aspect of the game, but for an Atari game, it does not take much. You can read it HERE
It has a contents page. Contents pages always make documents look important ;-) -
Code Issues
Our first attempt at the game, was very basic. It did not have a start screen, or re-start when it ened, but thanks to Emile, it has now and a life level counter, and it shoots too... well only in one direction, but still much improved.

Video Game History
Coding is fun (hmmmm ? ) , but the class on video game history was great... and in English too. Great to see how the ideas and concepts moved along. Very different attitudes, over the years.

Ray Casting
Its not as exciting as it first sounds. It is a way of getting the 'player controler' recognise when there is a 'useable object' a reachable distance infront of it, and is is used to affect things like switches , to open doors or pick up objects
-
Animation
In Unity, we use 'animations' to make players and enemies look like they are moving, or for example, to open doors. We are using it to make our bugs wings move to make it look like they are flying
-
Patrol AI
Patrol 'artificial intelligence', is a way of giving non-player (baddies) what to do, and how to go about their virtual world. In practice they go to each of the red dots and just keep going around... on patrol

Continued ...
All of the work from here on , refers mostly to our final project game, details of which can be seen in the Project Mangement Page
